NO (9) March or No March?

Supreme Court Bar Association’s President Ali Ahmed Kurd has announced that there will be a Long March on 9th of March 2009 in order to make a statement that the lawyers will not live with the issue still there. He has announced that they will march and stage a sit-in on the Constitutional Avenue. He made this statement on the launch ceremony of Munir A. Malik’s book “The Pakistan Lawyer’s Movement”. He further added that this time around the sit-in will continue until the judges are restored. Former president of Supreme Court Bar Association Aitzaz Ahsan was also present on the occasion with all other icons of lawyer movement.
Since July a lot has changed. Many have criticized Aitzaz Ahsan’s decision of not continuing the sit-in (which had its reasons) resulting in major disappointment among lawyers, student activist and civil society. Now Kurd is in charge and in presence of all the senior flag bearers of Independent Judiciary movement the statement that “this time around there will be a sit-in till the goal is achieved” felt a little different. Was there a hidden meaning? An expression of discomfort? Some harsh memories related to the ending note of last Long March? Long March last year was historical but at the end of the day government got successful by delaying things and making a lot of judges come back on their terms.
The Lawyer moment after the Long March took multiple turns when it was later labeled as a provincial movement owned by Punjab only. Then it was said that only lawyer have interest in this moment. The fact remains that PML-N did show a great display of strength in Punjab but Long March over all was supported by Masses, with almost every party participating in its own capacity. Few months down the road it’s has broken and fallen apart. Protest for independent judiciary has lost all the strength.
Now we see clear political divisions between lawyers and some of the senior ones have been found openly accusing Aitezaz Ahsan for selling the soul of the movement to PPP. PML-N, Tehreek-e-Insaaf, and Jamat-e-Islami all have shown their full intention of creating a display of public strength and mobilizing there party workers, but will they be able to mobilize the masses? Will they be able to bring those common people out of their homes that are deeper into the evil cycle of ROTI (food), KAPRA (clothes) aur MAKAAN (housing).

Do you think there should be a Long March? Will it be able to achieve the motive with far more aggressive leadership in place? Will anti-President factor be that strong this time around? How peaceful it will be considering that loyal of the movement are getting impatient day by day?
